Curricular Newsletter for Parents – September 2013

Welcome back to Year 5. I am looking forward to getting to know you better and beginning an exciting and successful year.

Every day
Children must bring their book bag, reading book, reading record and homework to school.  Children are allowed to bring their own pencil case if the would like but all resources will be provided by school if not.  Accelerated Reader books need to be read EVERY night for at least 20 minutes. Luckily we all love the brand new books so we know that it is a pleasure for almost all of us.

Tuesday and Friday

Children have PE  on a Tuesday and Friday so please ensure your child remembers to bring the correct change of  clothes.  Children will need a plain t-shirt (not their school uniform) and plain shorts or trousers.   We kindly request no football shirts.  Trainers will be required for these lessons.

The children will get an activity to complete in your homework book on Thursday.  You will then have until Tuesday to complete this.  You are able to hand it in earlier if you complete it earlier (but don’t rush!).  Spelling words are found at the front of the book for each week in the half term.  Spelling tests are on Tuesday.  Homework must be completed and handed in on time to a good standard.  Feedback will be given on areas of strength and development.

If you have any questions or concerns during the year. Please do arrange a mutually convenient time to come and chat to me.

English: We are going to begin the year looking at some fun poetry and some 1960’s cartoons.  We will write some of our own poetry too.  We are then going to explore some narrative writing (by Michael Morpurgo) and think about our half term topic of New Beginnings.  Towards the end of this half term  we are going to learn how to be persuasive writers so watch out as your child’s persuasive skills might get even better!

Maths: This half term we covering a wide range of topics around number and calculation strategies.  You child will also be assessed on their speed and accuracy of their times tables (up to 12×12).  If they find this a challenge, come and have a chat about some of the ways that you can help them to learn them.

Science: We will be exploring the unit called Gases around us.  What is covered can be found by clicking here although these will not be the exact lessons.

Topic:In Geography we are exploring the local area.  We are going to think about Longsight and Manchester as our locality and explore ways to improve it.  We will think about the needs of a local area and then plan our own new town.  We will also explore lots of different types of maps of the local area.

PSHE:  Our PSHE topic is new beginnings.  This will link into our other units but will include  creating a class charter, carrying out some team building activities and thinking about managing the feelings that come with a new beginning.
